Schmidt Sting Pain Index. You must be kidding…

This is hilarious. But, I suppose, necessary.

Dr. Justin O Schmidt, an entomologist (scientist who studies insects) who until recently worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, produced a 4 point scale to rate the pain inflicted by insect stings.

Short version (in case you don’t want to follow the link): don’t get stung by an Amazonian Bullet Ant. Ever.

He describes that as  “Pure, intense, brilliant pain. Like walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch nail in your heel.”

Phew!

Submersible sonic weapons. Naturally.

Continuing with the shark/ocean critters theme of today’s earlier post, comes this little beauty about the second loudest animal (after whales) in the ocean.

And it’s a shrimp!

The pistol shrimp uses a specialised claw to emit ’snaps’ so loud that the shockwave can kill nearby, small animals. The collapsing cavitation bubble that results from a single snap can sometimes produce light in a process called sonoluminescence.

V. strange…

Big shark

We all love sharks, right?

These guys REALLY love sharks. More to the point they love really BIG sharks.

Such as the 6 metre long specimen they filmed and posted here.

Oh, and the head is a metre wide…
