Submersible sonic weapons. Naturally.Posted: February 8, 2008
Continuing with the shark/ocean critters theme of today’s earlier post, comes this little beauty about the second loudest animal (after whales) in the ocean.
And it’s a shrimp!
The pistol shrimp uses a specialised claw to emit ‘snaps’ so loud that the shockwave can kill nearby, small animals. The collapsing cavitation bubble that results from a single snap can sometimes produce light in a process called sonoluminescence.
