Q: What is a Biogeoscientist?

A: Someone who calculates biomass on a global scale.

And the results of one such calculation has just been published: it would appear that the bottom of the world’s oceans contain 90 billion tonnes of micro-organisms (mostly from the Archaea domain).

I’ll say that again – 90 BILLION TONNES. Of microbes!!!!!

And while that might sound like a lot, it is equivalent to just 10% of the total carbon mass in tropical rainforests.
